Reflections of AED 200

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met?
My expectations were to learn more about art and have fun with it. Yes, these expectations were met.
2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting?
I still believe that art is something that helps people to express themselves in ways that they wouldn't be able to in another way.
3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?
In my original I didnt have a favorite because I really didn't know any. Now, my favorite I would have to say is the local artist I concentrated my art curation project on, Patrick Willett.

4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?
I was very hesitant about takng an online course. I like taking online courses but, I am very bad at taking them. I wait until the last minute and I also forgot some assignments by their due date. I believe that this ws my first and last online course.

 Me
Final Project
1. Why did you select the inspiration pieces?
I selected these inspiration pieces because I was originally going to draw myself with other factors surrounding me which is what all three of these pieces have in common.
2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait?
I enjoy using media that is unusual. I created it in pencil but then used glitter glue and colored pens to make it my own.
3. What challenges did you face in creating your self-portrait and how did you overcome them?
I am not a good artist at all. I attempted to draw my face but I was not doing very well at it. So, then I looked into creating an abstract self-portrait. I began having difficulty ith that as well but I just began to write down words that described me and that is how my self-portrait happened.
4. How does this piece represent you?
The first thing that sticks out to the viewer is "Emily" which is my name. I also added my middle name "Rose" underneath it as well. Inside the "E" I wrote down words to describe who I am and what I represent. The design in the upper right corner is a "star of life" It is the symbol for EMTs. Inside of that is written BVFA EMS, which is Bowmansville Volunteer Fire Association Emergency Medical Service, which is my fire company. The word "Rainmakers" is our mascot. We are called the Bowmansville Rainmakers. All of the decorations were used to brighten up the project.
5. What elements and principles of art did you apply in this work?
I used color, emphasis, balance, texture and unity.
6. Did you enjoy working on this project?
Yes, I did enjoy working on this project. It gave me a chance to express myself and be proud of who I am.
7. What do you think of your final artwork?
I believe my final artwork is unique, creative and expresses who I am and who I am proud to be.

I reviewed Wonders of Life, Motivation and Wild Life Encounters.

2. Why did you select the Exhibit you critiqued?
I chose Wild Life Encounters because I felt connected to the exhibit. I love and enjoy wild life very much.

3. What challenges did you face in writing the critique article and how did you overcome them?
I could not figure out a way to relate the exhibit. But then as I began to look more closely, I began to remember those memories I shared in the article.

4. How do you feel about critiquing your peers work?
I feel good about it. I feel like it could be helpful for the creator to hear what his/her peers think of their work.

5. Would you like to read the critique your peers wrote about your Art Curation Project?
Yes, I would love to hear what my peers think of my project because I worked very hard on it.

6. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your finished article and why?
I would rate it an 8 because I put a lot of thinking into it, but I don't believe it is the greatest.

7. Did you enjoy working on this project?
I did enjoy it because I enjoyed seeing all of the different ideas my peers came up with for their projects.

Week 15 video blog

Greenberg on Art Criticism: An Interview by T. J. Clark
1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
According to Clement Greenberg, "writing about visual art is much tougher than writing about literature or music". He reads the work of music critic Tovey to remind himself "how to be relevant". Greenberg comments in his early suspicion of modern art and his unfixed notion of mainstream. He and T.J. Clark discuss prejudices in art criticism and the best art of the last 50 years, which Greenberg feels has been predominantly abstract.Greenberg on Pollock: An Interview by T. J. Clark
1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
In the summer of 1947, Jackson Pollock paints his first spatter-drip piece. When he received the Guggenheim Award, Pollock explains that he will paint large, movable pictures that will function between the easel and the mural. Jackson Pollock has a disdain for easel paintings, yet his own paintings remained easel paintings until the end.
2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
This video discusses art criticism and helps to develop my thoughts on my project.
3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?
I thought this video was very helpful in me beginning to understand art criticism.
An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance (Giorgio Vasari)
1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The Renaissance is marked by a renewed enthusiasm in the arts and many Italian artists contribute to its development. Giorgio Vasari writes the "Lives of the Artists." Ancient Romans create art from natural beauty until Barbarians conquer the empire. Artistic endeavors travel east to the Byzantine Empire who focus on religious themes.
2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
This video does relate to art criticism because it gives another perspective and teaches us more abour art criticism.
3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?
I did like this film. This film presented a new perspective on art criticism.

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Media artists express their negative opinions about critics. What good do critics do? First of all, critics get us (the general public) to think. A "Washington Post" book critic sees his job as "lighting the way" for readers. Film critics help people get the most out of their film dollar. Criticism can also be fun for readers and viewers. Criticism of media arts improves the media in general. "Critics can keep artists on their toes," and sometimes critics' remarks give artists the big breaks they hope for.
2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
This video discusses media criticism, a different kind of criticism. This film does relate to art criticism.
3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?
I enjoyed this film because i enjoy media. It helped me to understand that there are different types of art criticism.
The Colonial Encounter: Views of Non-Western Art and Culture
1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Dahome art is visually beautiful, but it is often ignored as art and treated as craft. The 1900 Paris World Fair ran for 8 months. The colonial factions exposed the underlying nationalism of the event. Half the area was devoted to French imperialism while the rest represented other nations' colonies. While most countries were symbolized by famous monuments of each country, the Dahomian exhibit consisted of a group of thatched structures, suggesting that there was no civilized infrastructure.
2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
This film does relate to art criticism because it discusses history of art.
3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?
This film was ok. I was not very fond of the film, it was not very interesting but it did describe art criticism.
Jackson Pollock: Michael Fried and T. J. Clark in Conversation
 1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Michael Fried and T.J. Clark agree that Jackson Pollock is an enormously important modernist master who raises many questions with his work. They also acknowledge that he has been used as a negative point of reference for modern art. Michael Fried and T.J. Clark agree on Jackson's Pollock's importance in modern art but have offered conflicting reasons. Clark's emphasis is on the historical role of modern art while Fried is focused on the independence of its aesthetic.
2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
In this film two art critics discuss an artist and his works of art. This film does relate to art criticism.
3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?
I believe this film was very helpful. It helped me to better understand art criticism.
The Critics: Stories from the Inside Pages
2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
This video really did not help me with my project. It talked about art criticism but I feel like I really didn't learn much from it.
3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?
I did not like this particular film.

Creating my Exhibit Powerpoint

I really enjoyed creating this art exhibit. I absolutely love Buffalo and I don't think that Buffalo is ever given enough credit for being as beautiful as it once was. I wanted to re-create that beauty and show everyone that Buffalo is still beautiful. I found one artist by the name of Patrick Willett. He is an amazing local artist. He mainly creates works of art based on Western New York and it's surrounding areas. I did attemp to use other artists but, I enjoyed Willett's talents too much.
There were so many different types of creations he had. He had pen and ink drawings, watercolor paintings, photographs, both black & white and color, and graphic designs. It was definately hard to choose only 30 different pieces.
I believe that I did a great job on this project and I cannot wait for all of my classmates to view it and critique it as well.

Video Blog Week 13 and 14

The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art
Lowbrow originally meant pornography.  Pop culture, car culture, and folk art have both had major influences in Lowbrow. Some believe Lowbrow Surrealism is a more fitting term while others embrace Lowbrow.

Modern art in the MOMA from 1929 onwards was displayed primarily in chronological order, representing each art movement. Art is displayed on white walls with flexible lighting. By the 1970s, traditional ways of displaying modern art are questioned. Art came off the walls to become busy and noisy. Artists explore the political and ideological context of the museum itself.

Native Americans' bones were collected as a scientific curiosity during the U.S. genocide against Indians. Anthropologists differ on whether or not the remain should be returned to their ancestors.

By creating the first affordable, user-friendly camera George Eastman became the father of popular photography. The museum established at his home celebrates the contributions he and the company he founded have made to advance the art, science, and phenomenon of photography.

I bellieve these videos did help me alot in my project.

Week 11 Blog

Matisse and Picasso
1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.
             I enjoy Picasso's work.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Matisse is deliberate, rational, and very French in the way he organized his thoughts. Picasso is a worker, impulsive, and immerses himself in his painting. In 1912, Picasso invents the first collage, and is at the forefront of cubism.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
This video explains the concepts more and better.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I thought this film was very nice but again I enjoy Picasso's work so I am slightly bias.

Dada and Surrealism
1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I discussed these in my disscusion.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The Dada movement, born as a reaction to World War I, and its successor, Surrealism, opened new avenues for artistic creation by striving to bypass the reasoning process and tap directly into the unconscious mind. Hannah Höch, a Dadaist, uses art to attack the society she detests.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
This video explains more history of Dada and Surrealism.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I did like this video. It was very interesting because I am also interested in Dada because before reading about it, I had never heard of it.

Expressionism
1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I have never really heard of Expressionism and do not really understand it but it does sound interesting.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
An outgrowth of Fauvism, Expressionism emphasized color's emotional properties while demonstrating far less concern than the Fauves had with the formal and structural composition of color.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
This video creates a deeper and better meaning of the topic.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I thought this video was very interesting. It helped me to understand the topic better.

The Impact of Cubism
1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I find Cubism to be very strange so I thought I would try to understand it more.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Influenced by the works of Cézanne, African tribal art, and the art of the Iberian peninsula, Cubism—the most influential style of the early 20th century—offered European artists unfamiliar, nonclassical ways to represent form and space.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
This video explains cubism more and the history of it as well.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I liked this video because it helped me understand and like Cubism more.

My Mask

I chose this mask for inspiration because I think it is very mysterious and almost dangerous looking. I think it looks awesome. This mask is red and a small amout of yellow with many lines and texture which create a great sharpness and almost evil feeling of the mask.

I chose this mask because it is a German mask. I am German so I thought I would use a mask from my culture for some inspiration. The artist used light colors and lines to create a happy mask. I believe using this mask with the one above would make for an interesting mask creation.

I chose this mask because it is a German mask. I am German so I thought I would use a mask from my culture for some inspiration. This mask I feel is a combination of both masks above. It uses light colors but the eyes and mustache create an illusion of anger or evil like the first. The lines, texture and color of this mask create a very interesting and great mask.

These are my sketches.

This is my final sketch. I tried to use some lighter colors to bring about the second mask. I used the colors in the eyes to try to bring anger and evil into the mask as well. The mustache and beard are also dark to convey anger and evil.

I feel my mask is not very good. I gound it difficult to create a mask. I couldn't really get excted doing it or even have interest in it.

The Islamic, African, Buddhism and Hinduism artistic cultures

ISLAMIC ART AT THE V&A
1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose this video because I wanted to watch one video from each culture.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
A rock crystal ewer has much significance and history in the Islamic art collection. This ewer is very rare and precious. Surprisingly, the Islamic religion says very little about art. There is not much said about art in Islamic rituals.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
This video goes into more depth of what is in the text. It explains as well as adds more information about the Islamic artistry culture.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I thought the film was very informative. It adds depth by giving more in depth and specific history of the Islamic culture.

AFRICAN ART
1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.
Again, I chose this video because I wanted to watch a video from a different culture.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The olest existing African art is found in drier climates. Paintings and carvings on stone typically represent animals. Humans are also represented through ancient rock art.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The readings in the text are given more of an explanation and add more history and culture in the video clip. More history about African art is also given.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I think the film is very informing. I really enjoyed this video, mainly the information about the rock art. This video clip adds more history and culture to the text.

BUDDHISM
1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.
Again, I chose this video because I wanted to watch a video from a different culture.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The key to Buddhist teaching is "tanha," the extinguishing of all desires and all things that feed the ego and obstruct enlightenment. Within 100 years of Buddha's death, Buddhism spilt into two groups, "hinayana" and "mahanyana." The "hinayana" were also known as the monks.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The video clip gives more of a religious history than artistic history.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I found the video clip to be interesting. The video clip gave more insight to the religious history than the text did.

HINDUISM
1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.
Again, I chose this video because I wanted to watch a video from a different culture.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Varanasi is India's holiest city. This is where the River Ganges' is located. the River Ganges is the symbol of life, death and rebirth. Hinduism's gods and goddesses function in a way similar to Christian saints by providing access to Brahma/God. Hindu architecture is lush with decorative sculptures of many gods. Cremation in Varanasi on the Ganges is assurance of direct access to heaven.
3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
This video clip explains some difference between the Catholic and Hindduism religions. It focuses on the Hidduism religion and it's affects on the Hinduism artistic culture.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
This video clip was ok. I was not very interested in it though. This clip added depth by adding more religious history and culture and how it relates to the artistic culture and history.

Week 6 - Peer Reviews

1. http://kingcarrera1.blogspot.com/search?updated-min=2010-01-01T00%3A00%3A00-08%3A00&updated-max=2011-01-01T00%3A00%3A00-08%3A00&max-results=9

http://abate1.blogspot.com/

2. I thought both Abbey and Stephen illustrated the elements and principles very well. I enjoyed them both. The photo Abbey used as form, I also saw color in the photo as well. The photo Sthephen used for shape, I also saw could be used for Line.

3. Niether Abbey or Stephen had an image that was the same as mine. Although, I could relate to some of Stephen's such as "Saw and Sawed."

4. The image "Carcass of Beef" piqued my interest. Both Abbey and Stephen had this artwork. I dont feel like I have a connection to it other than hunting because I enjoy going out and hunting. My curiosity though is why would someone want to paint a picture of a bloody beef carcass?

5. I do find this to be valuable in my learning because although I feel like I do not learn more about art viewing my peers blogs but, I do learn different views my peers have of the same paintings.

6. I do find others comments helpful. Their positive feedback helps me realize that I do know what I am doing and that I shouldn't be afraid to express myself.

A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why? (#'s 1, 2 and 7)
Painting #1 is a photograph of the Erie Lakawanna Railroad. This made an impression on me because it is about a place that I live close to. It is a beautiful photograph of what used to be.
Painting #2 is a photograph of the Statue of Liberty from far in the distance. This picture is beautiful. It seems like the photographer is trying to make a point because the scenery surrounding the Statue of Liberty looks all dishevled and destroyed. It's beautiful.
Painting # 7 is a painting named The Coming Storm. The painting is just so powerful. It makes me think of the end of the world. B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why? (3, 5 and 9)
Artwork #3 is a painting of the Buffalo Harbor. I feel a connection with it because I have been to the Buffalo Harbor and to just think, that the Buffalo Harbor used to look like that, it is absolutely gorgeous. I love it!
Artwork #5 is a painting of Niagara Falls from Goat Island. Again, I feel connected with this painting because I have been to Goat Island and have watched the Falls in the same way.
Artwork #9 is another painting of Niagara Falls. I just love paintings and photographs of scenery and nature. I just cannot stop loving all of these scenic paintings, especially because they are of my hometown.

C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why? (4, 6 and 8)
Artwork #4 is a drawing entitled Lancaster. I would like to know more of this photo because if it is meant to represent Lancaster, NY, then I would like to know more because i live in Lancaster, NY.
Artwork # 6 is entitled Victoria. I would like to know where this painting was painted and why it was entitled Victoria.
Artwork #8 is a painting of Niagara Falls and Goat Island. I would like to know on which side of the Falls this was painted. Whether it be the Canadian side or the American side.

THE FIRST PICTURE ARE MY FIRST 5 SKETCHES

THE SECOND PICTURE IS MY FINAL LOGO

1. Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.
I thought creating my logo was a lot of fun. I learned how to say a few phrases in Gaelic. I am partly Scottish, so the different language in my photo is in Gaelic. It means "All my hope is in God," it is the motto of the Fraser clan, which is where I came from.

2. Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation.
I just wrote down a bunch of different ideas I wanted to share about me with everyone. I combined my love of the fire service, my family and the Scottish heritage of my family.

3. What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?
I discovered that I actually be really creative.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, powerpoint, and reading material  for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The important information I learned was how to create a logo and express myself in that way. I thought the videos were very helpful.

The Value Scale and the Color Wheel

1. Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.
I thought creating the value scale and the color wheel were fairly easy to do. The only part I had trouble with was the color wheel. I could not find the color magenta anywhere, so I tried to make it, which messed up all of the other mixing of colors. I think my color wheel turned out pretty decently though.

2. Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why?
I enjoyed working with the paint the most because I have always enjoyed working with paint and mixing colors together to get different colors.

3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies?
The most important discovery I made in the creation was that having specific colors matters when mixing them to create other colors.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The most important information I learned is that measurements and being detailed matters, along with having the correct supplies.

My Slideshow

http://s1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc368/trzeer23/AED%20Project%201/?action=view&current=399317e2.pbw

Above is my link to the slideshow I made on Photobucket to express my ideals of the Elements and Principles of Art.

At first I was very confused and not sure at all at what I was doing for this project. I calmed down and then realized that this is a great oppurtunity to understand the pictures that I actually take. I ended up enjoying this project and having fun with it. Some of the pictures are of drawings done by friends of mine that I thought explained some of the elements and principles. I also took this oppurtunity to share a little about myself. I included pictures of fire and a fire truck. I am a fireman and it is a big part of my life. I also included a picture of my nephew whom I love very much. This was a really fun and very informal project.

Color and feelings of art

1. Describe Color and it's effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.
Color can haunt a person in their sleep. When using color while painting things happen, most painters will have an image in mind but while painting the colors will just explode onto the paper.

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?
A theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues me is the color wheel. I am intrigue as to how the different theorists constructed the different color wheels. What determines what color is next to another and how they become so similar.
3. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?
I cannot believe how June Redfern can paint with so many colors. At the start of her paintings, they just look like different lines in different colors but, the beauty of her paintings come out using the many different colors.
4. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?
I am impressed on how artisits can show emotions through their paintings.

My first Blog

1. How was the process of creating the GMail account and setting up the Blog?
I found the both processes to be quite simple. I figured it all out quite well.

2. What do you expect to learn in this course?
I expect to learn more about art. I find art interesting, eventhough I am not very artistic.

3. How do you feel about taking an online course?
I am VERY nervous about taking an online course. I feel that I may get lost and confused. I sure hope I do not, but you never know.
